Feeling down?
Look up!

Have you ever noticed that when someone is feeling “down” everything about them appears to be down, too?  Paint a mental picture of a man who is very sad or depressed: his face is down, his mouth turns down, he sags, he hangs his head, and he can hardly look at you when he speaks.  It is easy to tell where we get the expression that he is “feeling down.”

A very wise man once told the me that it is almost impossible to be depressed while looking up.*  I experimemted a bit with this advice and I have to agree; there is something about looking up that just lifts my spirits. Now, I know that there are some of you out there who are saying, “Oh, yeah? Just watch me, I can do it! I can look up and still feel down.” Well, as Abraham Lincoln, said: “People are about as happy as they want to be.”

So, for those of you who want to be happy, the next time you’re feeling “down,”  give it a try.  Look up at the ceiling or the sky.  Straighten up your posture, gently tilt your head back and take a couple of good breaths.  Give it a couple of minutes; after all it took a while to feel bad, so it might take a bit to feel better.  This won’t change whatever was bothering you, but it may help you to view the challenging situation with a more positive frame of mind.
